Lincoln Financial Foundation Awards Nearly $268,000 in Grants to Guilford County Agencies
Greensboro, N.C., September 25, 2013 /3BL Media/ – Grants from Lincoln Financial Foundation are supporting Guilford County agencies that provide housing for the homeless, food for the hungry and needed services to adults and children at risk. Lincoln Foundation recently awarded $267,880 in human services grants to 15 local nonprofit organizations, a portion of $1.8 million in charitable funds it has allocated for Greensboro in 2013.
Housing Greensboro received $25,000 for its Weatherization Home Repairs project, a subset of the overall home repair program, which provides energy-efficient upgrades to homes owned by low-income seniors and those living with disabilities in Greensboro. This program focuses on making the repairs necessary to provide warmer homes in the winter and cooler homes in the summer, equating to lower utility costs for the homeowner. All repairs meet the Home Performance with Energy Star model which was designed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy. As a result of these repairs and upgrades, the homeowner has a warmer, drier and safer home, lowering their utility costs by at least $25 per month and allowing them to purchase necessary food, clothing or medications that they might forgo in order to heat their house.
Other human services grants awarded include:
- $40,000 to Greensboro Urban Ministries for Beyond GUM, homelessness prevention and rapid re-housing services to families at risk of becoming homeless.
- $35,000 to Partners Ending Homelessness for Continuum of Care, supporting training and community education, data collection and county-wide strategic planning among human service organizations addressing homelessness.
- $22,000 to Triad Health Project for direct client services, including medical case management for individuals living with HIV/AIDS and supportive services such as health care, substance abuse treatment, referrals, transportation and emergency subsidies for rent, utilities, medication and groceries.
- $20,880 to Sanctuary House to support healthy meals, equipment and supplies for life skills training and transportation for Sanctuary House clients.
- $20,000 to Habitat for Humanity to provide renovation, repair and energy efficiency upgrades on foreclosed properties to be purchased by Habitat homeowners as well as fund Homeowner Financial Education and opportunities for Lincoln Financial employee engagement.
- $20,000 to the Mental Health Association for the Wellness and Recovery Academy, which offers peer mentoring, group support, treatment strategies, anger management and information in navigating the mental health system for seriously mentally ill individuals.
- $15,000 to Children’s Home Society for the Youth Empowerment Center, which provides supportive services for teens aging out of the foster care system.
- $15,000 to Interactive Resource Center to provide supportive services to Greensboro’s homeless population during the winter months, including job fairs, health workshops, assessments and housing fairs.
- $15,000 to West End Ministries for Leslie’s House, an emergency housing and homeless assistance center for women without children.
- $10,000 to Barnabas Network for the No Child Sleeps on the Floor Campaign, providing mattresses and frames to children in need, many of whom are transitioning out of homelessness.
- $10,000 to Horsepower, Inc., for the Ride to Thrive program, which provides equine therapy for students and recovering veterans.
- $10,000 to Senior Resources of Guilford for the Mobile Meals program, delivering daily prepared meals to homebound, lower-income senior adults.
- $5,000 to East Market Street Development Corporation to provide weatherization services for qualifying homeowners in Greensboro.
- $5,000 to Food Assistance, Inc., to provide home-delivered groceries to senior adults in Guilford County.
