On a Friday afternoon, when many people were looking ahead to weekend plans, 31 Aflac employees gathered in a Columbus, Georgia, warehouse with a different purpose in mind.
This weekend, 98 LIVESTRONG Leaders from 30 states and 16 countries will converge in Austin to talk about how to support cancer survivors in their home towns. The LIVESTRONGLeaders Program engages volunteers across the globe in support of our mission to improve the lives of people affected by cancer now. This yearly advocate training is a unique opportunity and allows dedicated individuals to deepen their understanding of LIVESTRONG’s efforts and meet other survivorship advocates from all over the world.
Approximately 1,200 Astellas employees attending the international pharmaceutical company’s National Sales Forum in Las Vegas, Nev., recently took time out of their busy meeting schedule to volunteer their time to benefit four different charities in Southern Nevada. CITGO Petroleum Corporation has entered into a new partnership with First Response Team of America, making CITGO the natural disaster response organization’s official fuel sponsor. With this partnership, First Response Team of America, which aids communities between the onset of a natural disaster and the arrival of traditional relief agencies, will be able to continuously and reliably fuel its support vehicles as they travel the country assisting areas in need.

Any Amgen Scholar would be fortunate to land in David Mooney’s cell and tissue engineering lab at Harvard University. In the past year alone, his team of 40 scientists -- 10 of them undergraduates -- has packaged cancer vaccines into new scaffold-like materials. They’ve made elastic gels on which bone stem cells stand a better chance of survival. And they have developed strands of nanomaterials that can deliver drug “refills” to existing drug-eluting implants.
