International Women’s Day (IWD) is observed each year on March 8th to celebrate the economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and to bring attention to persistent inequality and the barriers to gender parity. The day, which has evolved into a global movement not affiliated with any particular organization or sector, emphasizes a call to action for accelerating change.

Give Something Back and Do The Right Thing are two core values important to The Wendy’s Company, and employees live these values in a variety of ways. Each year, Wendy’s is proud to recognize employees and all they do to make a positive impact in their communities through its Community Ambassador Grant Program. Ten Wendy’s employees are recognized for exemplary volunteer efforts in their communities with a $2,500 grant to an organization they support with their time, talents, and resources.

Extending a Hand Foundation is a nonprofit whose mission is to increase awareness about the poor living conditions and the primary necessities of children and elderly in situations that include vulnerability, abandonment, sexual abuse, lack of affection, and the physical and psychological mistreatment.

Volunteerism has long been an integral part of Box’s epic corporate culture. The technology company, based out of Redwood City, CA, wanted the process of finding and signing up for volunteer opportunities to be as easy as possible for their employees. With VolunteerMatch’s Network Integration, they were able to consolidate their giving platforms and incorporate thousands of searchable, real-time volunteer opportunities.

A funny thing happened on the way to writing this piece. I am addicted to online solitaire applications, and one of my favorites offers new backgrounds for different holidays. I was delighted to see that International Women’s Day was among their choices, and used adjectives such as courageous, strong and independent with names including Betty Friedan, Sonia Sotomayor and Gloria Steinem. Women’s leadership comes in many shapes, cultures and ages. It is sometimes quite overt and others times very silent.
