Duke Energy is partnering with DonorsChoose.org to help teachers in Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina and South Carolina fund projects that support literacy programs and foster a growing interest in science and technology fields.

The national nonprofit Living Lands & Waters began its MillionTrees Project in 2007 by collecting and planting acorns. The group harvests the growing saplings and partners with communities and companies like General Motors to meet its ambitious goal – growing 1 million trees across the United States. This year, 27 GM facilities in seven states are taking part, providing more than 25,000 oak trees to employees and their families for Earth Day and Arbor Day plantings.

Nonprofits like TreeFolks in Texas have restored habitats, planted trees, and engaged volunteers, thanks to the Wells Fargo Environmental Solutions grant program which awarded $15 million in Environmental Solutions for Communities grants between 2012 and 2016. Grantees used the funds to restore more than 94,000 acres of habitat, plant more than a million trees, and engage more than 900,000 volunteers in land and water conservation, environmental education, and water efficiency. AEG’s LA Galaxy Foundation has announced a new, five-year partnership with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) that will see $500,000 donated to the Sports Medicine Program in the Children’s Orthopaedic Center. Along with the new partnership, LA Galaxy President Chris Klein will serve as a member of the Children’s Orthopaedic Center (COC) Council and the team, staff, and academy will continue to make CHLA regular trips to the hospital to visit patients as part of their longstanding relationship.

In celebration of its 20th Anniversary, the LIVESTRONG Foundation – a global leader and pioneer in cancer patient survivorship – announced today the launch of The LIVESTRONG Honor 5k/10k, which will take place on September 17 in downtown Austin.

AEG welcomed more than 30 students from Pasadena’s John Muir High School to its global headquarters in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday, April 26 for the first Arroyo Seco Weekend Job Shadow Day. As part of AEG’s community outreach initiative with Pasadena Unified School District in conjunction with Arroyo Seco Weekend in Pasadena, Calif. in June, students were exposed to the company’s many facets of the sports and entertainment industry and received advice on future career paths.

Last year for National Rebuilding Month, 148 of the 1,942 rebuilding projects were completed for community facilities and spaces, which collectively impacted 100,000 people across the country.

Early childhood development can be significantly impeded by an unsafe or unhealthy environment. Rebuilding Together affiliates nationwide gather volunteers to tackle such issues for families with young children.

Foundations have often relied on government as an ally to scale up and sustain the programs they pilot. But what happens when government does not respect hard facts, scientific proof, or democratic principles? Or when the vision of a just and equitable society is replaced by the false belief that pursuit of prosperity depends on the eradication of compassion?
