Community Involvement

Volunteering has always played an important role in Paul Son’s life. In college, Paul volunteered as a tutor and science fair mentor at a school near the University of Washington. In 2011, Paul first experienced disaster response when he was deployed to Batrop, TX, where a fire had scorched 40,000 acres and destroyed over 1,000 homes. Together, these experiences inspired Paul to spend his sabbatical doing what he does best — give back to the community.

Our employees from around the globe brought passion, smarts and tons of fun to this years’ Global Day of Service. From rebuilding schools, to helping students improve their resumes and making bread for underserved communities, we’re thankful to have such an inspiring team.

The numbers tell the story: 2,300 volunteers, 14,000-plus hours served, 267 projects completed, 3,500 hurricane kits packed and 1,286 teddy bears stuffed. These are just a few of the numbers that showcase the impact of Duke Energy In Action Month.

At Comcast, our employees are passionate about giving back to their communities and making the world a more sustainable and better place. Their commitment is a driving force behind our engagement and outreach efforts for sustainability, powering service projects like Comcast Cares Day, and all year-round.

In recent weeks, Comcast NBCUniversal and Sky employees gathered their friends, family members, nonprofit partners, and community leaders to participate in Comcast Cares Day 2019, one of the largest corporate days of service globally, and a celebration of our company’s year-round dedication to giving back.

Host and Common Impact CEO Danielle Holly is joined by Marcy Scott Lynn, Facebook’s Director of Global Impact Partnerships and a member of nonprofit Camp Tawonga’s Board of Directors. Marcy has scaled Facebook’s social impact work through the implementation of several CSR projects, including rolling out the Safety Check feature, which in the wake of natural and man-made disasters lets users alert their friends and family that they’re safe.

Smithfield Foods, Inc. is pleased to announce the recipients of the Smithfield Foundation’s inaugural charitable grant program, which was launched in 2018 to continue to bolster the company’s charitable giving efforts. The Smithfield Foundation is a nonprofit organization and philanthropic arm of the company. In addition to unveiling the new grant program, 2018 marked a tremendous year of philanthropic giving, with Smithfield contributing nearly $29 million in cash and in-kind donations to organizations and projects outlined in the company’s recently released 2018 Sustainability Report.

The best part of the corporate social engagement process is its people. Especially those who are our evangelist to share, describe and empower social impact and its key factors to demonstrate the ongoing commitment to social missions and local needs. An instrumental function in our people driven engagement is the Employee Resource Group. Employee resource groups (also known as ERGs, affinity groups, or business network groups) are a collective of employees who join together in their workplace based on shared characteristics or life experiences.

Points of Light has announced additional speakers and entertainers who will join the opening plenary lineup at the 2019 Points of Light Conference, taking place June 18-20 in St. Paul.

More than 100 Duke Energy and Piedmont Natural Gas volunteers spent the day at Governors’ Village STEM Academy in north Charlotte on May 10 to build an outdoor learning lab.
