Graduate students in Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs program joined Barclays this spring in a commitment to help address stresses on the world’s freshwater supplies through a Capstone workshop. This was the fifth consecutive year Barclays hosted its work-study program with Columbia University students.

VIDEO | International Water Prize Competitors Complete Cold-Climate Testing in Race to Solve Algal Bloom Crisis

May marked the final month of pilot stage testing for the top 9 George Barley Water Prize contestant teams. This international $10 million grand prize competition aims to find a lasting solution to the problem of harmful algal blooms fed by excess phosphorus. Begun in 2016 with more than 100 contestant teams, the competition’s latest stage challenged teams to test their innovations in real-world, cold-climate conditions. The winning team will demonstrate a cost-effective, scalable solution to remove and repurpose phosphorus from freshwater.

Underscored by the survey’s finding that two-thirds of the industry respondents are exploring or have deployed smart technologies in their water plans, digital water – the reality that data holds unprecedented potential to make our water supply safer, more abundant and efficient – is gaining traction among global water providers.

San Isidro is one of the most populated barrios in Puerto Rico, but a lack of access to safe drinking water in the community was made worse by Hurricanes Irma and Maria last year.

Planet Water Foundation’s AquaTower system, supported by Xylem, will provide a vital resource for this resilient community to support their water needs as their rebuilding process continues.

Xylem Watermark & Project 24: Lvea, Cambodia

Lvea is a rural village remotely situated to the southeast of Kampong Speu Province in Cambodia, approximately 62 km from the closest provincial town. More than half of the local population lives below the poverty line and without access to clean water or health care services.

Xylem Watermark & Project 24: Repok Bunut, Indonesia

As with many other communities in the east of Lombok, Repuk Bunut Village struggles to access clean water. For the more than 1,250 residents in this village, only 14 wells are actively used to meet the daily water needs. The water is dirty and harmful when consumed. Unfortunately, there is no other choice but to use the contaminated water, which can lead to illnesses that greatly affect the education of local students.

Access to clean water and water hygiene education are both necessary to provide these chidlren with a better, healthier life. The AquaTower provided to this community by Xylem Watermark and Planet Water Foundation during Project 24 will help to bring that needed change.
