June 2, 2015 /3BL Media/ - Three books focusing on the biodiversity of the Mimika Regency in Papua have been published. The first book is Mangrove Estuary Shrimps of the Mimika Region, the second is Field Guide to Frogs of the Mimika Region, and the third is A Guide to the Birds of the Mimika Region. The three volumes complete a 10-book series on biodiversity that has been funded and published by PT Freeport Indonesia.

The PT Freeport Indonesia Environmental Department has been conducting biodiversity research in Papua since 1995 as part of the Company’s commitment to the conservation of the region’s flora and fauna.

Half of the 361 birds cited in A Guide to the Birds of the Mimika Region are species unique to the island of New Guinea, and are restricted to the alpine ecosystem of the snowy mountains. The book comes with a compact disk containing a recording of 227 bird sounds from various species, most of which were recorded in the company area.
