This short video captures the excitement of The George Barley Water Prize Stage 3 awards ceremony, held in downtown Toronto a few weeks ago. Sponsored by The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation, this four-stage competition offers an incentive for scientists and technologists to deliver a breakthrough for solving phosphorus-fed algal blooms that affect all 50 U.S. states and many waterways worldwide.
Corporate Responsibility
Recently the Water Brothers, producers of an international water-focused TV series, traveled to the Prize testing site to document ongoing research and testing. There they talked with contestants to uncover what is causing this summer’s massive outbreaks, what the risks are, and how we can solve them.

May marked the final month of pilot stage testing for the top 9 George Barley Water Prize contestant teams. This international $10 million grand prize competition aims to find a lasting solution to the problem of harmful algal blooms fed by excess phosphorus. Begun in 2016 with more than 100 contestant teams, the competition’s latest stage challenged teams to test their innovations in real-world, cold-climate conditions. The winning team will demonstrate a cost-effective, scalable solution to remove and repurpose phosphorus from freshwater.
Media & Communications
Over the last year The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation partnered with Andy Mann, a world-renowned National Geographic photographer and adventurer, to document the problem of nutrient pollution in America’s lakes and watersheds. In this video Andy reflects, “I’ve traveled the world sharing the heartbreaking stories of our planet’s water issues, and I’ve never seen anything like it.”
