Responsible Production & Consumption

FoodPort
Steven Colbert once noted, “If the human body is 98 percent water, why am I only 2 percent interested?” Colbert’s jab appropriately questions our wasteful mindset regarding our most precious resource. Our food supply can be viewed similarly: how can we so easily accept wastage levels of 30-40 percent of life-sustaining food resources?

Social Impact & Volunteering

Four Steps to Successful Corporate Citizenship
After nearly five years, a team of John Deere managers recently returned to three villages in rural Rajasthan, India, with great anticipation and a simple purpose: to see whether the Joint Initiative for Village Advancement (JIVA) was living up to its name.

JIVA, which means “life” and “livelihood” in the local Mewari dialect, is a joint project of the John Deere Foundation and PYXERA Global that is designed to empower smallholder farming communities to improve their lives through agricultural training, educational enrichment, and capacity-building. The John Deere team, which included Chairman and CEO Sam Allen, first recognized the project’s potential while volunteering in the same villages in 2011.

It Takes Two (or Sometimes Three) to Make a Thing Go Right
We also get asked this question A LOT: “How do you do it? How do you get companies, NGOs, and government agencies to work together?” So, we decided to stop simply talking about the power of partnership – now we are teaching it, too. With experience designing and implementing partnerships in more than 90 countries, working with more than 30 multinational corporations, and over 28,000 local businesses, NGOs, government agencies, and educational institutions, we’ve learned a thing or two about getting very different collaborators to agree on mutually beneficial goals.

Responsible Production & Consumption

Avoiding the Slings and Arrows of the Food Chain
Across the agricultural landscape, critical crop yield interventions like fertilizers, bio-pesticides, drought resistant seeds, and better farming practices have been the predominate methods of improving food security. But what about the basket of tomatoes that falls off the back of a truck on a bumpy road? Or the crate of produce that spoils in the heat before ever reaching its destination? Or the fields of fruit that rot on the vine due to a seasonal glut? While these situations may seem inconsequential, individual moments of food loss add up over time.

Education

Positive Youth Development
Like an infant who sees rapid physical changes in the short amount of time to toddlerhood, adolescents experience the same kind of rapid change in their social and emotional development on their way to adulthood. Traditional thinking on adolescence characterizes this as a time when youth display negative risk-taking behaviors. A Positive Youth Development (PYD) approach, long used in the United States and other industrialized countries, takes a different view. It treats adolescence as an opportunity to harness the great energy and emotional growth that takes place during this developmental stage.

Education

The Youth Employment Crisis
Young people play a vital role in fostering global economic development. In the face of weak prospects for global economic growth, their involvement in the formal economy becomes increasingly relevant and urgent. In recent years, there has been much talk about the demographic dividend in most emerging economies and less-developed countries, a scenario where a larger proportion of the overall population is of working age. In Mexico, young people between 15 and 29 represent the largest age group. By 2022, the country will have the largest number of youth in its history and its size will shrink in the years that follow, as the country transitions toward an aging population.

Ask, Spark, Crowdsource
As dad to three daughters and Acting Special Representative to the Secretary’s Office of Global Partnerships at the U.S. Department of State, I often find there are themes that are consistent throughout my day, no matter the setting. One of these themes centers on encouraging a crowd-sourcing mentality to find potential solutions for emerging questions or challenges. Whether I am at home with the kids on a Saturday afternoon or surrounded by colleagues on a Thursday morning in the office, I’m constantly learning from those around me and ever-cognizant and humbled that I may not have the perfect recommendation to my daughter’s hypothetical question on what she should add to her reading list (though like any good dad, I would, of course, have some recommendations ready to offer).

Education

The Power Skills in an Age of Disruption
“Almost 43 percent of the global youth labor force is either unemployed or working, yet living in poverty,” according to Global Employment Trends for Youth 2015 by the International Labour Organization. In countries with mature economies, nearly one in five students don’t acquire a minimum level of basic skills needed to be gainfully employed.

A striking trend juxtaposes the un- and underemployed young people around the world. According to PwC’s 18th Annual Global CEO Survey of 1300 leaders, CEOs now find it so difficult to identify people with the skills to grow their business that 75 percent rank the skills shortage as the number one threat to their success. Forty percent of global employers report a talent shortage in their organization, according to the Manpower Group.
