Alexion is committed to sustaining our planet and serving the communities where we work. We invest in these communities and our shared planet in support of those who depend on us today and the generations to follow. Acting on this commitment, Alexion has an established and integrated Environmental Health and Safety Management System that ensures not only regulatory compliance, but also environmental sustainability and worker health, safety and well-being. As Alexion prepares for its first Corporate Social Responsibility report to be published in 2020, we continue to reflect on our progress to date:

LEED Certified buildings in Boston, MA and New Haven, CT
Alexion’s New Haven building earned the first platinum LEED certification in the city. To earn LEED certification, a building must meet specifications for water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, innovation in design, sustainable site operations, and regional priorities. The building earned 82 of 86 possible points.

Zero process waste to landfill
Process waste is a by-product of researching, developing and manufacturing lifesaving therapies. Alexion has established a hierarchy of waste minimization that starts with avoiding the use of hazardous materials, then reducing, reusing and recycling where available, and finally recovering, treating and disposing as last resort when prior options are not technically feasible. In 2018, Alexion achieved its goal of zero process waste being sent to landfill for final disposal.

Water Reduction Project completed in Athlone
Alexion’s manufacturing facility in Athlone, Ireland recently implemented a Reverse Osmosis water recovery process to purify and re-use water which may otherwise not be clean enough for Alexion’s production standards. The system was made operational in January 2019 and is expected to save between 15,000 and 25,000 Liters of water per day.

Energy Analysis Study Completed in Dublin
Through studying energy usage for process cooling systems, Alexion was able to optimize operations by eliminating a tempered glycol addition to the system. The total energy reduction amounts to approximately 459,000 Kilowatt hours per month or 128 CO2 equivalent metric tons per month

Our Manufacturing Plants in Ireland are powered by 100% renewable energy.
In 2018 Alexion’s Ireland facilities used a combined 54,027,209 kilowatt-hours of clean renewable energy.
