Once Reserved for Critical Infrastructure, Distributed Energy Resources Come to the Masses

From a municipal airport in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to a school district in Salinas, California, microgrid projects are popping up across the country, fueled by the desire for energy cost savings, sustainability, reliability and resilience. Applications of this technology, which typically includes renewable energy, energy storage, fossil-fueled generation and load management, can be spotted in critical infrastructure installations such as data centers, military installations, college campuses, office parks and airports. But given microgrids’ unparalleled ability to deliver backup power during an outage and reduce energy costs for a broad swath of the market, these early examples are just the tip of the iceberg.

Extreme Weather Like Hurricane Florence Shows We Need Clean, Stable Energy Infrastructure

Let's suppose, for argument's sake, that you question whether climate change is real, or whether it will really affect you. You're not alone. More than a third of Americans say they don't worry much or at all about global warming and a third say it's exaggerated in the news. More than half say it won't pose a serious threat in their lifetimes, and 12 percent say it will never be a threat.

Ecocentricity Blog: Slowing to a Crawl

Yes, Hurricane Florence began to weaken as it approached the Eastern seaboard. It also began to slow down, but that isn’t a good thing. A slow-moving storm might hit less area, but the area it does hit suffers tremendously.

Building More Resilient Communities: Pro Bono As a Tool for Disaster Preparedness

From massive natural disasters to complex and escalating conflicts, communities around the world experienced unprecedented incidences of crises requiring emergency response last year. The global cost for natural disasters in 2017 alone totaled $330 billion. In the wake of disasters, many companies mobilize to offer volunteers for on-the-ground rapid response activities and to provide financial assistance, often spending significant portions of their philanthropic budget on disaster relief. But, is there room for more to be done?

Integrating Renewables in the Grid: A Snapshot of Progress

Just a few years ago, there were predictions that 30 percent of power from renewables was all the grid could easily handle and that anything more would have significant consequences. However, recent events have shown that it is possible to integrate much higher levels of renewable energy without large negative effects. Part of the reason is that the growth has been incremental, typically a few percentage points a year, allowing grid planners to adjust as needed. It’s also because of the emergence of technologies and techniques that help incorporate fluctuating power from renewables into the grid.
