Opinion: Let's Work Together for Michigan's Future
The Detroit Regional Chamber’s 39th annual Mackinac Policy Conference is shining a spotlight on the major opportunities that our state is embracing. New political leadership at the state level and rapid evolution in our state’s automotive and high-tech industries make this a perfect time to focus in on Michigan’s priorities and future. The Mackinac Policy Conference brings people together from all walks of life. Currently, we are operating under a split government following a contentious election. The umbrella of "One Michigan" creates paths to prosperity for families and businesses to grow and thrive. When we bring Michigan together, there is nothing we can’t solve.

The three pillars of this year’s conference speak to those shared values and celebrate all that Michigan has to offer.

Consumers Energy Chief Sees Solar Future in Michigan
Patti Poppe likes to joke about the bumper sticker she once stuck on her Chevy Volt electric hybrid car: “I ♥ coal.”
These days, the sticker sits in Poppe’s office at Consumers Energy’s headquarters in her hometown of Jackson. It’s a symbol of her personal evolution on climate change — and the transformation she’s leading at Michigan’s largest natural gas and power provider.

Innovation & Technology

Consumers Energy Passionately Supports the Robotics Revolution
Ellen Green signed up for her high school robotics team because she’s competitive and likes to be involved – not because she was looking for a career.

But Green fell in love with industrial engineering while leading Notre Dame (Pontiac) Prep’s team to success and championships in FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics competitions.

We support FIRST Robotics—which held its national championship in Detroit in 2018 in the first year of a three-year contract—because it creates interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields among Michigan students like Green. In 2018, our foundation contributed more than $450,000 for FIRST Robotics teams at elementary, middle and high school levels across the state.

Moving Michigan Forward with Electric Vehicles
The following is a guest blog by Patti Poppe, president and chief executive officer of CMS Energy and Consumers Energy.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are in the fast lane across the U.S. That’s why we’re working to create the infrastructure that Michigan EV drivers need — today and in the years to come.

I was privileged to discuss how our industry is working to electrify transportation at CERAWeek, one of the world’s premier energy events.

Consumers Energy Announces Plans to Develop Solar Power Plant in Cadillac
Consumers Energy announced today that it plans to develop its third solar power plant in Cadillac, building on its Triple Bottom Line commitment to people, the planet and Michigan’s prosperity. The Cadillac City Council this week approved an agreement to allow Consumers Energy to place solar panels on the Mitchell-Bentley property, a currently vacant site with a manufacturing history that dates to the late 1800s.

Consumers Energy Program to Support Electric Vehicle Adoption
Consumers Energy Co. is leading the charge to bring electric-vehicle infrastructure to Michigan.

As automakers look to electricity to fuel future vehicles, the Michigan Public Service Commission approved this week the state's first EV infrastructure pilot program. The three-year, $10 million incentive program would provide rebates for electric vehicle chargers and a special rate for nighttime charging.

A Clean Energy Revolution Is Rising in the Midwest, With Utilities in the Vanguard
Even with all the evidence that renewable energy has become less expensive than fossil fuels, it doesn't seem real until utilities start to stake their futures on it. For some Midwestern utilities, 2018 is the year that happened.

Xcel Energy of Minnesota in early December said it would go to zero carbon emissions throughout its eight-state territory by 2050, the first major utility to do so. That followed some big steps by Consumers Energy in Michigan and NIPSCO in Indiana, which issued plans to shut down coal-fired power plants sooner than previously planned while also accelerating development of wind and solar power.
