SAN DIEGO, March 7, 2022 /3BL Media/ - Environmental Business Journal (EBJ) has recognized WSP, a leading engineering, environmental and professional services consultancy, with three of the publication’s 2021 EBJ Business Achievement Awards.

WSP received the Mergers & Acquisitions Award for two significant acquisitions in 2021, which broaden the firm’s environmental consulting expertise; the Wetland Restoration Merit Award for the Saw Mill Creek Wetland Restoration in New York City; and the Habitat Enhancement Merit Award for the East River Marsh Habitat Enhancement project.

Mergers & Acquisitions Award. In February 2021, WSP acquired Atlanta-based Earth Consulting Group Inc., a 90-employee environmental and engineering consulting firm that added specialized technical expertise in remediation to WSP's existing suite of services, including its proprietary Groundwater Plume Analytics® tools. In April, WSP acquired Ontario-based Golder Associates, a well-respected, leading global consulting firm with 60 years of experience and more than 7,000 employees providing earth sciences and environmental consulting, doubling WSP’s environmental capabilities worldwide. These acquisitions directly contributed to the goals of WSP’s 2019-2021 Global Strategic Plan and will contribute to the firm’s strategic growth and value creation.

Wetland Restoration Merit Award. WSP designed the Saw Mill Creek Wetland Restoration, the first wetland mitigation bank in New York City. Located on Staten Island near a heavily used marine channel where the wetlands became rife with decades of debris and contamination, this project demonstrated how nature-based solutions can create a resilient and biodiverse future, transforming the site into a fully functioning tidal wetland with a forested buffer. WSP’s design removed the debris and contamination, improved tidal hydrology exchange, reestablished native plant species and increased fish and wildlife habitat. Saw Mill Creek Wetlands is now a self-sustaining aquatic ecosystem.

Habitat Enhancement Merit Award. WSP provided design services to New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation for the East River Marsh Habitat Enhancement project at Beaver Island State Park, Grand Island. The design restored two off-river features, provided a habitat protecting young fish; installed five reefs to protect the shoreline and its habitats; expanded public access to the Niagara River Shore; restored a shoreline trail; and reused excavated sediment to reclaim lower park areas. The park has become a popular waterfront destination, as the reefs protect kayakers and canoers from Niagara River waves and the trail provides easy access for hikers and birdwatchers.

“WSP is honored to receive these prestigious awards from EBJ,” said Denny Papilion, president of the Earth & Environment business line at WSP USA. “The publication’s recognition of our advancements and innovations in our environmental business speaks volumes about our commitment to providing preeminent technical expertise and Future Ready solutions across all public and private sector markets.”

Published by Environmental Business International Inc., EBJ provides strategic business intelligence to the environmental industry. The Business Achievement Awards program recognizes business performance in a range of areas, including strategic growth, mergers and acquisitions, exceptional projects and technology development. Final awards were determined by a committee of EBJ staff, editorial advisory board members and regular contributors.

The 2021 EBJ Business Achievement Awards will be presented on March 16 during the Environmental Industry Summit in San Diego.
