Campaign: Lincoln's Legacy

On July 22, the Urban League of Philadelphia hosted a private unveiling of a signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. It was a special event designed to acknowledge a gift made possible by Lincoln Financial Group. The company facilitated the loan of the document for the National Urban League’s annual conference opening session on July 24.

The partnership was a part of “Lincoln’s Legacy,” a new Lincoln Financial Group three-year initiative designed to educate children and adults on the historical relevance of President Abraham Lincoln, as well as the continued importance of freedom and opportunity to America's future.

“With this year marking the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, we saw an incredible opportunity to publicly recognize the inspirational legacy of our namesake, President Abraham Lincoln,” said Allison Green, senior vice president and chief diversity officer for Lincoln Financial Group. “Over the next three years, we will sponsor a variety of events and experiences like this one that connect the past to the future. We were so honored to have been able to facilitate the loan of such a treasured document to the Urban League.”

This particular copy of the Emancipation is known as the Leland-Boker Authorized Edition. It’s part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, which the company owned until donating it to the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites in 2008.

Following the select appearances at the National Urban League events, the exhibit then opened to the public. It is on display from now until September 22 at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

“Lincoln's Legacy encourages children, adults, families and communities to gather, share and celebrate stories that ultimately become footprints for generations to come," said Nancy Rogers, senior vice president and president of the Lincoln Financial Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Lincoln Financial Group. "Bringing the Emancipation Proclamation to the Urban League and the City of Philadelphia is just the beginning. We look forward to sponsoring more events like this in the future.”
