GM China Releases 2018 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

Report details vision and efforts of GM and its joint ventures in China for sustainability

2018 GM China CSR Report

General Motors China has issued its 2018 Corporate Social Responsibility Report to provide an update on its CSR efforts and commitment in the areas of safety, sustainability, education and the community. The report also provides an update to its stakeholders about the actions taken by the company and its joint ventures in China to help achieve GM’s global vision of zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion.

Highlights from the report include:

  • Average power and water consumption used for producing vehicles and engines decreased more than 5% at GM’s manufacturing facilities in China in 2018.
  • Through the GM China Green Supply Chain program, 72 energy-saving and environmental-protection actions were implemented by 16 suppliers in 2018, reducing their carbon dioxide emissions by more than 40,000 tons and water usage by 28,000 tons, and generating cost savings of RMB 25 million.
  • Cadillac launched the Drive Sand Campaign and the Little Populus Plan to prevent desertification along the G7 Expressway in Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia.
  • Cadillac also launched the Little Lion Program to help rural teachers leverage the internet to provide high-quality education to their students.
  • The GM-sponsored Safe Kids Safe Ride program partnered with Guangzhou Child Safety Centers, bringing child safety knowledge to more than 2,000 kindergartens in Guangzhou. The program, which entered its fifth year in 2018, has benefited more than 330,000 children and their parents.
  • GM China supported the Village Kindergarten program in Ledu, Qinghai, with more than 470 disadvantaged children receiving early education courses taught by GM employee volunteers between 2016 and 2018.
  • Besides dispatching volunteers to teach in rural areas, the Chevrolet Red Chalk Education Program – which celebrated its 13th anniversary in 2018 – carried out the Village Teacher Training Program and Summer Camp for rural teachers and children to broaden their horizons and provide them new knowledge.
  • On average, 20% of GM employees in China receive career development opportunities each year. The number of employees receiving overseas development opportunities increased by 30% on an annual basis in 2018.
  • GM employees in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou volunteered more than 1,600 hours of their time.
  • GM China and its joint ventures received 12 CSR awards and honors, and more than 15 of their vehicle models received product quality or reliability awards.
