First Country in Africa's GLR Issues Minerals Export Certificate

Rwanda becomes the first country in Africa's Great Lakes region to issue certification verifying that their minerals are conflict free

On November 5th, Rwanda issued the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) Mineral Export Certificate, making them the first country in the region to do so.  The move marked an important first step towards strengthening the legal trade of minerals mined in Africa.  By doing this, it gives multinational companies, and most importantly their customers, added confidence that purchasing products that contain minerals from the region will not contribute to armed conflict.

The citification of mineral exports will also bring bring back companies that recently have ceased purchasing from the region due to the US Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, which requires United Stated based, publicly traded companies to perform a due diligence on their supply chains to source the materials in their products.
