Dallas Theater Center (DTC) and Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds ‘pulled back the curtain’ to provide students from the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy (BOMLA) with a ‘behind the scenes’ experience in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math). The program consisted of two components: students attended a live production of Sense and Sensibility, based on the novel by Jane Austen, and Behind the Curtain, a hands-on workshop taught by DTC’s technical staff.

Behind the Curtain was held at the Kalita Humphreys Theater in Dallas on Saturday, May 23rd. Although this was a holiday weekend, our young thespians were inside learning how science, technology, engineering and math are used in lighting, scenery and sound design in a theatrical production.

The full-day program was presented by DTC’s master electrician, sound supervisor and technical director. Sessions connected students to engineering, physics, chemistry and even geometry! DTC technicians explained how the theater creates visual effects such as fog, fire and lightning to provide a magical and rewarding theater experience. Students also participated in creating a stage set with the assistance of DTC technicians and TWC employee volunteers.

DTC’s mission is to “engage, entertain and inspire a diverse community by creating experiences that stimulate new ways of thinking and living.” Behind the Curtain encouraged students from the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy to not only think differently about STEM, but to develop a greater appreciation of the importance of STEM in a live, theatrical performance.
