In an early celebration of Veteran’s Day, today Diageo is hosting the company’s first ever Military Service Appreciation Day at its North American headquarters in Norwalk, Connecticut. Part of the company’s Diageo Salutes the Troops initiative, this day brings Diageo’s employees, non-profit partners and Norwalk community members together to show appreciation for those serving in the military.

What does sustainability mean to Qualcomm? It’s a question I love to answer, and it’s a question I’m surprised I’m not asked more often.

Our progress in diverting materials from landfills has accelerated dramatically since 2013. In fact, waste sent to landfills from pulp and paper mills was reduced 24 percent, as we coordinated a more consistent, disciplined, company-wide approach to defining, measuring and reporting byproduct streams.

If you had a functional magic wand wouldn’t you use it to reverse climate change? A quick flick of your wrist and, presto change-o, our troubles would be over! But, as our guest this week on Sea Change Radio, David Hart, rightly points out, that’s not how the world works.

The U.S. News and World Report ranks the University of California (UC) Berkeley as #1 on its list of Top Public Schools in America. They take graduation rates, academic reputation, alumni giving rate, and more into consideration. In my opinion, a commitment to public service can positively influence all these factors. And UC Berkeley is no stranger to public service.

To become world class requires a company to focus on more than simply maximizing its profits. It also needs to take a global leadership role as a responsible corporate citizen.

Data-driven algorithms govern many aspects of life: university admissions, resume screening, and a person’s ability to get a car or home loan. Often, using data leads to more efficient allocation of resources and better outcomes for everyone. But algorithms can come with unintended consequences—and without care, their application can result in a society we don’t want.
