LEED v4 Adopts Living Future's Declare Label

On April 4, 2016, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced that the Living Future Institute’s Declare label is now an approved pathway for Option 1 of the Building Product Optimization and Disclosure, Material Ingredients credit for LEED v4. Declare labels with ingredient disclosure greater than 1,000ppm now comply with the LEED v4 credit requirements.

Beware the Slippery Slope: Slips, Trips, and Falls in Healthcare Facilities

US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2014 (the most recent year published) show that total recordable case rate for hospitals (injury and illness cases per 100 full-time workers) is 6.2. The hospital injury rate is higher than in mining (3.8), hazardous waste treatment and disposal (4.6), and manufacturing (4.0). Now that should set off an alarm for health and safety professionals.

Surprisingly, though, the second highest cause of injury in hospitals is from slips, trips and falls (STF). In the United States, STF by hospital employees account for 25% of injuries; in the United Kingdom, SFTs account for almost half of the workplace injuries in healthcare. These STFs can, at minimum, result in a decrease in the healthcare worker’s ability to do his or her job effectively,

Experts Discuss Better Treatments Against Parasitic Diseases

On April 4-8 2016, the Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD) held a Symposium on Parasitology in Lusaka, Zambia, bringing together international and local experts in the field with the aim of engaging in productive scientific exchange on parasitic diseases - including malaria, sleeping sickness (Human African Trypanosomiasis), Chagas, leishmaniasis, and cryptosporidiosis. Experts engaged in discussions over target product profiles for these diseases and shared the latest accomplishments in drug discovery and cutting edge basic research that will potentially enable the delivery of novel drug candidates with the adequate pharmacological profiles.
