This past May, I attended the Social Media Tools Summit in Boston. This event got me thinking about social media tools and organization in a new way.

Today, online platforms like Taproot+, NPower, and Public Architecture’s 1% Program are simplifying the user experience, making pro bono projects “just work” in ways they didn’t before.

On Friday, September 18, Ghetto Film School Los Angeles and the nonprofit Film Independent will present the second annual GFS LA Screening Showcase, where GFS students' 11-minute short films will screen at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the largest art museum in the western United States. GFS, which offers hands-on training and film education to young people from low-income communities, is now in its second year in Los Angeles. 21st Century Fox is the funding sponsor of GFS LA.

With October around the corner, the UK Modern Day Slavery Act will be in full enforcement with new and heavier regulations for companies operating within the UK. This new provision, under section 54 of the MDSA, will apply to all commercial organizations that conduct business in any parts of the UK. The goal is to wipe out human slavery within any one of these business’ supply chains.

Next week, world leaders will launch a new round of goals, targets and indicators to pick up where the Millennium Development Goals left off. In the new issue of Novo Nordisk’s sustainability magazine – TBL Quarterly – the company shows how improving the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes plays a key role in achieving many of the 17 new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

On Tuesday, September 15, 20th Century Fox and Microsoft announced the Hacking Mars Design Challenge, a unique online science and technology competition developed exclusively around the upcoming Fox film The Martian to drive interest in STEM subjects. The winning team will collect a $25,000 grand prize and travel to Microsoft to experience the company's HoloLens technology. The contest is open to anyone in the world over the age of 18, but students with interests in STEM are strongly encouraged to apply.

Trane is showcasing its leadership in home heating and cooling products and technology at Comfortech, the national HVACR, Hydronics and Plumbing Conference and Expo in St. Louis, Sept. 16-17.
