Not so long ago, the major tech companies were held up as ideal models of innovation and progress. Now, a reality check seems to be setting in as they face increased consumer and regulatory scrutiny. Facebook continues to be under fire for lack of transparency in how it shares customer data. Amazon is taking hits for “unethical and illegal” workplace conditions in the Chinese factories that produce its Echo and Kindle devices. It’s gotten to the point where Hollywood is turning out features in which Silicon Valley figures are portrayed as supervillains.
At the heart of innovation is action, and when it comes to energy management and automation, innovation means embracing digital transformation to build a more sustainable future.
Brands and organizations shared aspirational and inspirational messages and stories throughout the week – from Vancouver’s City Manager Sadhu Johnston who explained how Vancouver plans to be greenest city in the world by 2020 to REI’s ambition to awaken a lifelong love of the outdoors for all. Here are three ideas – some big and some small – that stood out to us last week:
Introducing the GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards, the first global standards for sustainability reporting. This animation is a great way to learn more about the standards, which will replace the GRI G4 Guidelines on the 1st July 2018.
GRI’s mission to empower decisions that create social, environmental and economic benefits for everyone, can only be fulfilled if everyone is represented. Rick Goings and other members of Tupperware’s leadership team visited a Boys & Girls Club in Zona 4 de Mixco, Guatemala. Rick and his team were quickly impressed by the number of kids at the club, who were very eager to welcome them and share their stories.
In this Q&A, Chris Lloyd, Verizon’s Director of Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy, and Chair of the GeSI Human Rights Committee, shares his views on the industry’s responsibility to support human rights.
At PepsiCo, we know our teams are stronger when all voices are heard at the table, which is why we’re committed to attracting and retaining the next generation of female leaders. And now, in recognition of our efforts, we’ve been named one of the Top 1,000 Companies Worldwide for Millennial Women in 2018 – and given honoree recognition among 150 companies – by Mogul, an online platform that enables women around the globe to connect, share information and learn from each other.
The word “sustainability” doesn’t give too many farmers the warm fuzzies, admits Margaret Henry, PepsiCo director of sustainable agriculture. She gets it. Henry grew up on a Kentucky dairy farm.
But here’s why she thinks the concept is important: In her view, it allows the food system to speak with a common language that resonates with consumers. If used properly, it instills confidence that farmers and their food-system partners are conserving natural resources.
We selected 12 companies with reputations for having solid pro bono programs. We interviewed both the company and one of its nonprofit partners. After the interviews, we had to admit that we hadn’t uncovered anything particularly innovative. But we did find a lot to be excited about. The result is the newly published report, “Pro Bono Today: What’s New, What’s Working.”
