LEMONT, Ill., October 17, 2017 /3BL Media/ - In September, the CITGO Lemont TeamCITGO volunteer organization was awarded the Volunteer Group of the Year by the MorningStar Mission in Joliet, Ill. at its annual volunteer banquet.

According to MorningStar Mission volunteer coordinator Lisa Wainwright, customarily, the Volunteer Group of the Year Award is granted to individuals who display an exemplary volunteer spirit, but this year MorningStar Mission staff unanimously decided to honor the CITGO Lemont TeamCITGO organization as a whole.

“CITGO volunteers have a great attitude, and are willing to take on any task. They are consistent, passionate and selfless,” said Wainwright.

TeamCITGO volunteers, the outreach arm of the CITGO Lemont Refinery including employees, contractors, retirees, family and friends, are involved in a variety of programs at MorningStar Mission as well as many community service projects in Lemont and the surrounding areas. From serving dinner in the East Side Café, to distributing holiday baskets to the community, organizing birthday parties for the children at the women’s shelter, and serving as mentors for the men’s 180 Program, TeamCITGO volunteers are making a difference.

“We are truly honored by this award because it celebrates the mission of CITGO to participate as an active member of our community,” said Jim Cristman, CITGO Lemont Refinery Vice-President and General Manager.

About the CITGO Lemont Refinery
For over 90 years, CITGO Lemont Refinery has employed more than 750 Chicago area residents on a full-time and contract basis in support of the local economy. In addition to producing high quality fuels for a large portion of the network of nearly 5,500 independently and locally-owned CITGO stations across the country, Lemont Refinery employees also make a major positive impact on the community. Each year, more than 2,500 volunteer hours and thousands of dollars are given in support of community programs such as Muscular Dystrophy Association, United Way and a variety of environmental and preservation programs. Operations at the Lemont Refinery began in 1925 with a major expansion, doubling the facility, in 1933. Over the years, new units were added to meet the demand for a better quality of gas for automobiles, aviation fuel for WWII, and the production of asphalt.
