(3BL Media / theCSRfeed) May 24, 2011 - Verizon’s 7th annual corporate responsibility report http://www.reportalert.info/ra/profiles/Verizon/2011/?ID=38051 shows how the company’s innovative broadband and wireless technologies are tackling pressing issues such as education, domestic violence prevention and sustainability.

The results demonstrated in this report focus on several key areas for Verizon:

  • Environment - Developed a new “carbon intensity metric” to measure carbon efficiency, enabling the company, for the first time, to accurately quantify the impact of its green initiatives. Verizon committed to reporting carbon efficiency each year, with a goal of increasing efficiency by an additional 15 percent in 2011. The company also deployed an additional 1,642 alternative fuel vehicles, bringing the total to more than 1,900.

  • Empowering Employees - Invested $297 million last year in the development, education and training of employees. The company also partnered with its health care provider to reach out to more than 81,000 female employees and their family members to highlight racial and ethnic disparities in breast cancer screenings and outcomes to encourage early detection.

  • Ethics & Governance - Conducted a broad poll of consumers, opinion leaders and employees to understand their perceptions of Verizon’s corporate citizenship, identify areas for improvement and establish a benchmark to measure progress.

  • Partnering with Communities - Verizon employees accounted for 733,806 volunteer hours in 2010, up 4.4 percent from 2009. In addition, the company invested $66.8 million in the community via the Verizon Foundation.

  • Service and Innovation - Introduced the Verizon Medical Data Exchange, a platform that enables health care providers to securely exchange digitized clinical documentation, and began issuing 2.3 million free medical identity credentials to health care practitioners to accelerate the sharing of electronic health data.
