(3BLMedia/theCSRfeed) July 30, 2010 - Johnson Matthey, the international speciality chemicals company, has published its 2009/10 Sustainability Report online at http://www.reportalert.info/reportprofile.php?ID=32226&year=2010

The report reviews the company’s progress towards its ‘Sustainability 2017’ Vision and the work it is doing to reduce its own environmental footprint, waste and use of resources. Among its business activities, Johnson Matthey produces environmental technologies, many of which enhance quality of life or help others to reduce their impacts.

Johnson Matthey launched its Sustainability 2017 programme in December 2007. Under this, Johnson Matthey’s businesses are defining their own plans to meet the Sustainability 2017 aspirations. A strong emphasis on getting employees to buy into the programme has been maintained through company-wide communication and training. A sustainability intranet has been launched to encourage employees to feedback ideas and share best practice.

The response to Sustainability 2017 has been powerful. Local teams have continued putting effort and imagination into realising sustainability – in the workplace, in the community and at home. The report is supplemented with a series of case studies on the company’s website which document environmental, social, community, health and safety initiatives, together with examples that show how environmentally beneficial technologies are being developed.

The programme is underpinned by a clear strategic framework with key targets (carbon neutrality, waste and resource reduction, earnings growth, health and safety). While steady progress has continued, Johnson Matthey recognises the need to focus further on step change opportunities to accelerate performance towards the targets. Initiatives to drive improvements are described, including a feature on how the group is developing its carbon neutrality strategy.

Johnson Matthey is a world leader in environmental technologies with a significant proportion of profit generated by products that directly benefit the environment. It celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2017 and aims to enter its third century as a more sustainable and competitive business.
