May 28, 2014 /3BL Media/ - CEMEX (NYSE: CX) has released its 2013 Sustainable Development Report, which presents how the company is addressing the challenges of increasing urban populations.

2013 highlights include:
 

  • Completed 368 infrastructure projects representing almost 7.5 million m2 of concrete pavement for highways, mass transit projects, airport runways and city streets in 15 countries.
  • Built 7,513 houses in 2013 (from 2,942 in 2012) and is now executing projects in 19 countries (from 9 in 2012). Housing solutions now include industrialized, disaster relief, energy efficient, vertical, and affordable housing.
  • Completed 2 BRT lines in Mexico, which are expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 26,000 tons and around 35 minutes in commuting time.
  • Benefited over 175,000 individuals with self-construction programs including Patrimonio Hoy, ConstruApoyo and Productive Centers of Self-Employment.
  • Continued industry leadership in use of alternative fuels transforming agricultural, industrial and municipal waste into fuel for cement kilns, achieving a 28.4% alternative fuel substitution rate.
  • Avoided more than 7 million tons of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, equivalent to the emissions made by 1.3 million cars.

The 2013 report achieved a GRI-checked level of A+ for the sixth consecutive year. It includes an external limited assurance statement by PwC for the eighth consecutive year and a statement from the company’s Sustainability Reporting Advisory Panel.
