Michigan DEQ Recognizes GM for Recycling Excellence

DETROIT, May 5, 2015 /3BL Media/  – The Department of Environmental Quality and Governor’s Recycling Council recognized General Motors for excellence in recycling today at the Governor’s Recycling Summit in Kalamazoo.

GM received the Business Category Outreach and Education Award for the company’s vision to reimagine waste, viewing it as simply a resource out of place.

For the past five years, GM implemented projects to repurpose more than 700 Chevrolet Volt battery covers into wildlife nesting boxes, and over 1,200 shipping crates into raised urban garden beds. Through these projects, GM works with students, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and community based youth organizations, as well as their own employees, to communicate its vision and educate thousands of people on the importance of reuse and recycling.

The awards honor organizations excelling in several key categories, including providing leadership, improving measurement tools, expanding recycling rates, focusing on outreach and education, increasing access to recycling, and “closing the loop” by designing or creating new products that can be recycled or  by purchasing and using products made of recycled content.
