Sustainable Infrastructure

Glumac, A Tetra Tech Company, provided sustainable design and commissioning services to support four projects that recently won Engineering News-Record (ENR) California awards.

Tetra Tech’s sustainable infrastructure group, which includes Glumac, specializes in high-end design and consulting for commercial, institutional, advanced technology, and healthcare facilities worldwide. Our team supports clients from design through construction and operation and provides comprehensive and coordinated sustainable building engineering services, including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design; commissioning; energy analysis; lighting design; technology integration; sustainability consulting; and construction management. Our teams have worked on some of the most iconic sustainable buildings gracing skylines around the world.

Tetra Tech is proud that our teams contributed to so many innovative, sustainable projects that were recognized for overcoming challenges; contributing to industry and community; and exemplifying best practices in safety, construction, and design quality. Our teams supported the following award-winning sustainable design projects.

Kaiser Market & Valentine Specialty Medical Office Building

Tetra Tech was part of the design team for the Kaiser Permanente Market Street Medical Office Building, which received an ENR Southern California Best Project Award in the Health Care category. Tetra Tech provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering; daylight modeling; energy analysis; and LEED consulting services for the project. To reduce the building’s energy consumption, our team implemented high-efficiency rooftop air handlers and additional internal energy and heating solutions designed to actively mitigate energy use. The facility has achieved 25 percent energy-cost savings and is targeting LEED Silver certification for energy, lighting, water, and material use efficiencies.

California State University Northridge (CSUN) Sustainability Center

Tetra Tech provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering and sustainability services as part of the design team for the award-winning CSUN Sustainability Center. To maximize the efficiency of both energy and water use, our team incorporated a 25-kilowatt photovoltaic system, solar thermal and hybrid hot water system, and irrigation using both graywater treatment and rainwater harvesting systems. The facility is targeting LEED Platinum and Living Building Challenge certifications with Net Zero Energy. Tetra Tech worked closely with Cal State Northridge students on the design of the Sustainability Center, holding planning activities to learn about their needs for the facility and provide an educational opportunity for students in CSUN’s Sustainability program to learn more about current solutions.

Wilshire Grand Tower

Tetra Tech was part of the design team for the Wilshire Grand Tower, which received an ENRSouthern California Best Project Award in the Residential and Hospitality category. The Wilshire Grand Tower, once the iconic Wilshire Grand Hotel, is a Los Angeles landmark in the heart of downtown. Our team provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design and energy modeling and analysis services to ensure the building’s design was sustainable. Cosentini Associates, A Tetra Tech Company, also provided high-rise expertise through peer review of the designs. Tetra Tech performed the envelope analysis and recommended materials to optimize the building’s exterior and enhance the efficiency of the climate control system. Our team designed a stormwater and condensate harvesting system to operate the open-air cooling towers used for climate control. By trapping and reusing both rainwater and the substantial amounts of water lost during the cooling process, the facility can save as much as 550,000 gallons of water per year. The 73-story tower, which is the tallest building in the western United States, is targeting LEED Gold certification.

Banc of California Stadium

ENR California selected the Tetra Tech-supported Banc of California Stadium in downtown Los Angeles as the recipient of a Best Project Award in the Sports and Entertainment category. Tetra Tech provided commissioning services for the 22,000-seat soccer stadium that hosts the Los Angeles Football Club. The stadium also will anchor a larger development featuring a conference center, office space, a soccer museum, and 10,000 square feet of restaurants. Tetra Tech’s commissioning team optimized building mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to perform in accordance with the owner’s and architect’s design intent. This includes aligning the stadium’s systems to meet California’s rigorous Title 24 energy code requirements. The Banc of California Stadium is the first open-air stadium built in Los Angeles since 1962.
