BALTIMORE, November 15, 2016 /3BL Media/ – As the final stop on the company’s 2016 tour of volunteer events across its network, CSX hosted a day of service at Windsor Hills Elementary School in Baltimore, Md. More than 130 volunteers from CSX, Windsor Hills, and nonprofit organizations City Year and Action for Healthy Kids joined together to improve the school.

Projects completed on Saturday included constructing an outdoor classroom; building garden beds and benches; and painting murals and graphics in the hallways and cafeteria as well as on the school’s exterior. In addition, CSX partnered with the Baltimore Tree Trust to plant 50 trees at the school campus.

"The Windsor Hills Community was blown away by the volunteer turnout. It is amazing what can be done when businesses, organizations, schools, and the community combine forces to work toward a common goal of making our school communities brighter,”  said Corey Basmajian, Windsor Hills principal. “I can’t wait to see the look on the students’ faces when they come up the path on Monday morning!"

CSX has strong ties to Baltimore, where the company operates three major facilities. Last year, the company handled more than 1.3 million carloads of freight on its rail network in Maryland and employed around 1,600 people in the state.

“CSX Service Days are all about going ‘Beyond Our Rails’ to give back to the communities where our employees live and work,” said John Wright, Baltimore Division Manager, CSX. “We’re proud to have the opportunity to create a positive influence in schools like Windsor Hills and support the next generation of leaders.”

Wide Angle Youth Media, a Baltimore-based non-profit, attended the event to document the day. Wide Angle provides young people with media education, and also operates a social enterprise that gives paid workforce development opportunities to young people interested in media careers. The organization’s video on the service event will be available later this fall.
