Books for Kids Foundation Library Renovated by Legg Mason

The SCAN LaGuardia House Nursery at East River in New York City currently serves 60 children ages 2-5 in a full-day preschool program, and regularly utilizes a Books for Kids library in their day-to-day activities. Last summer, an unexpected flood destroyed the original library, damaging the carpet, furniture and books.

As a sponsor for Books for Kids, Legg Mason donated time and resources to renovate the library so the staff could continue to provide a space to promote literacy development to the children. The renovation included over 700 new library books, new shelving, new décor and child-friendly furniture.

The donation from Legg Mason also afforded Books for Kids the opportunity to provide one year of Literacy Programs, including StoryTime, an initiative to acquaint the children with the library and get them excited to borrow books through the Lending Library Program.

In addition, Legg Mason employees began reading to the children once a week in mid-July and will continue through the year in support of the Books for Kids mission.

The Books for Kids Foundation aims to promote literacy among all children with a special emphasis on low-income and at-risk preschool-aged children. Books for Kids creates libraries, donates books, and implements literacy programs to develop the critical early foundation and skills which young children need to be successful in life.
