It has been nearly fifteen years since C.K. Prahalad and Stuart Hart first helped business peek through the window of possibility of the Base of the Pyramid. By providing an accurate view of low-income markets—made up of four of the seven billion people who occupy the planet—Prahalad and Hart helped illuminate the opportunity for multi-national companies to both seek their fortunes and bring prosperity to the poor. Beyond charity, beyond experts delivering orchestrated interventions, Prahalad and Hart argued that these people lacked access to essential goods and services. If companies could create markets that met those needs at an affordable price, global society and business would both profit. Business leaders around the world began to take note.
