Amgen Scholars at the University of California, Berkeley participates in ten weeks of intensive research in the sciences. Each student has direct participation on a research project in a faculty member's laboratory and directly with an in-lab mentor, a postdoctoral scholar and/or a graduate student. In the lab, students have the opportunity to participate in weekly lab meetings, journal club, and other lab activities. UC Berkeley's program offers students the opportunity to learn from leading scientists working on cutting-edge research across several disciplines including; various areas within the biological sciences, bioengineering, chemical and biomolecular engineering, chemistry, and chemical biology. Scholars not only engage in laboratory research during the summer, but also attend weekly seminars on a broad range of scientific subjects, workshops on graduate admissions, preparing poster and oral presentations, networking events, and career opportunities in the sciences.

Amgen Scholars' benefits include a stipend, round-trip air travel to Berkeley, paid summer session fees, housing, meal allowance, and paid expenses to attend the National Amgen Scholars Program Symposium at UCLA in July. Graduate Student Program Assistants (GAs) work outside of the lab and assist participants in all aspects of the program with emphasis on the academic and social components. GAs meet regularly with scholars to obtain progress reports and provide a variety support. GAs also mentor scholars and play the role of liaison between the faculty, lab members, and the scholar. UCB Amgen Scholars Alumni continue successful enroll in prestigious graduate and professional programs across the nation. The 2015 Amgen Scholars Summer Program dates are June 1- August 7, 2014. Deadline to apply to the Amgen Scholars Program at Berkeley is February 2, 2015. Accepted applicants to the program will be notified starting February 27, 2015. Notifications will continue throughout the month of March.
