Amidst increasingly intense public scrutiny of the energy sector, TransCanada received the good news this month that it has once again been named to Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) -- for the 12th consecutive year. DJSI World measures a company’s performance not only in terms of stock price, but also the organization’s commitment to environmental and social excellence.

“Like TransCanada, many of today’s successful companies are operating with their stakeholders in mind,” says Sean McMaster, executive vice- president, stakeholder relations. “Corporate social responsibility performance contributes to longer-term financial viability, which further promotes healthy communities and stable economies.”

TransCanada’s ranking is important on a number of fronts. DJSI indices are seen as a credible, third-party validation of TransCanada’s overall economic, social and environmental performance by stakeholders including investors, regulators, government representatives, prospective employees, competitors, and environmental opposition groups.

The Dow Jones indices evaluate corporations on criteria such as climate change strategies, energy consumption, human resources development, knowledge management, stakeholder relations and corporate governance.

The DJSI indices serve as benchmarks for investors who integrate sustainability considerations into their portfolios. Asset managers around the world monitor the DJSI to help make investment decisions for a variety of mutual funds and other financial products that have a sustainability focus.

Benchmarking opportunity

“Our participation in select surveys such as the DJSI provides TransCanada with benchmarking opportunities to assess areas of strength and areas we can consider for improvement,” says Kelly Matthews, Senior Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Advisor.

“While we were pleased with our ranking on the DJSI World, this is the second year TransCanada has not appeared on The DJSI North America. As companies continue to enhance their sustainability performance, these rankings are becoming increasingly difficult to secure. The CSR team will assess our results and continue our dialogue with the facilitators of the survey, ROBECO SAM, to develop a deeper understanding of their metrics and weightings.”

Each spring, many internal departments at TransCanada are called on to provide responses to the sustainability survey, including Corporate Secretarial, Risk, Internal Audit, Health & Safety, Human Resources, Supply Chain Management, Stakeholder Relations, Community Investment and Environment.
