August 29, 2013 /3BL Media/ - EarthSayers, LLC in coalition with Sustainability Action Media (SAM) announces an online video and social media campaign featuring on location interviews with sustainability leaders at the 34th America’s Cup Finals, San Francisco, California, September 7 to the 21st, 2013.

Yes, and from the start, the objective of the organizers has been to be the most sustainability conscious sporting event in one of the most sustainable cities in North America. We will highlight these voices of sustainability, those involved in event planning and execution, as well as leaders from the world of sailing who promote sustainability awareness through their actions to protect and conserve our oceans.

More than a sport
The America’s Cup Sustainability Plan explains “the America’s Cup Event Authority (ACEA) is committed to delivering a model sustainable sporting event and to leave a positive legacy in the local community on the sport of sailing.”  The organizers have taken the opportunity “to engage with the public to deliver a positive message and raise environmental awareness.”

In keeping with the principles of sustainability and within the context of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) the ACEA set out from the beginning “to optimize the social, economic and environmental impacts of our activities in delivering the 34th America’s Cup to enrich the communities we visit and protect natural ecosystems.”

The Sustainability Plan
Their approach is outlined in a Sustainability Plan crafted with the help of partners, City departments and commissions, local businesses, and San Franciscans. The plan affords the organizers the opportunity to produce a model sustainable sporting event and leave a positive legacy in the community, as well as on the sport of sailing. In our blog, Sustainability Advocate, we will be covering best practices on challenges such as minimizing carbon emissions to emphasizing natural resource stewardship in a series of posts to be published in September and October.

Sailors for the Sea
Very early on non-profit Sailors for the Sea first brought to our attention the role of sustainability in the America’s Cup. The Sailors for the Sea Clean Regattas program helps regattas, sailing programs, and other events voluntarily achieve higher environmental standards and provides third-party certification that events meet sustainability criteria. Participants work to fulfill comprehensive best practices and receive the economic, public relations and social benefits of running environmentally friendly events.  It follows they are the Official Clean Regattas Partner of the 34th America’s Cup.

Sailors for the Sea proudly works with like-minded organizations to grow awareness of the need to reduce the threats to the health of oceans and local waters. And in this spirit, Earthsayers.tv, voices of sustainability, has created a special collection focusing on them.  It’s a mix of interviews, here is one with Hilary Wiech, communications and program manager, Sailors for the Sea and member of Woonsocket Rockets, and informational videos like this one announcing Sailors for the Sea as the Official Clean Regattas Partner for the 34th America's Cup.

Our intention is to grow this collection over time and with our interviews in San Francisco provide original content from the 34th America’s Cup focusing on their leadership role in ocean conservation and to increase awareness for their Clean Regattas certification program.
