Subaru and United By Blue Head to the Nation's Capital

(3BL Media) July 11, 2012 - Every year, 20,000 tons of trash enters D.C’s forgotten river-the Anacostia. Subaru and its partner, United By Blue, will be combating the Anacostia River’s trash problem with a river cleanup on Saturday, July 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 pm.

Volunteers will be supplied with free breakfast, lunch, bags, gloves, supplies, bug spray, and sunscreen; they just need to show up with helpful hands. Volunteers should meet at River Terrace Recreation Center located at Anacostia Ave NE in DC.

“We’ve hosted over 70 cleanups in two years and our Anacostia River cleanup has been one of the most memorable cleanups to date. Last year, we picked up almost 4,000 pounds of trash from along the river,” said Mike Cangi, UBB Director of Cleanups. “Now that we have our official cleanup vehicles, two Subaru Outbacks, I am confident we will be able to haul even more trash this time around.”

The all-wheel-drive Subaru Outback is the official cleanup vehicle of United By Blue, toting their volunteers and supplies as they clean oceans and waterways up and down the East Coast. In April, Subaru of America and United By Blue picked up 7,248 pounds of trash from the Cooper River, just around the corner from the Subaru’s headquarters in Cherry Hill, NJ and has plans to host two additional cleanups this summer.

“Subaru and its DC area dealers are committed to protecting areas, such as waterways, that Subaru owners enjoy as part of their outdoor, active lifestyles. We’re looking forward to uniting our owners, dealers, employees and the public to help improve the Anacostia,” said Todd Lawrence, Subaru Promotions and Sponsorship Manager. “United by Blue shares similar environmental concerns, so a partnership with them, that allows us to assist in river cleanups, is a natural fit.”

United By Blue and Subaru’s partnership is not just driven by cars and cleanups; Subaru and United By Blue co-branded, rugged, organic t-shirts and hoodies are available for purchase on Subaru Gear’s website.
