Campaign: Energy Efficiency

Lakewood, N.Y., October 17, 2017 /3BL Media/ – National Grid’s emphasis on economic development and customer growth will result in significant energy cost savings at Cummins Inc.’s Jamestown Engine Plant. There, National Grid invested $692,000 to support an advanced LED lighting project that includes a wi-fi enabled lighting control system. Through National Grid’s Energy Efficiency program, Cummins replaced nearly 3,000 fluorescent lights that were approaching end of life. Cummins leaders estimate that the LED lighting project will save about nine percent of the plant’s total energy use, with an annual cost savings of $425,000.

National Grid’s various programs provide financial incentives to eligible commercial and industrial customers for installation of energy-efficient lighting, controls, HVAC equipment, motors, electronic speed controls and other systems that reduce energy use and/or enhance productivity. “When companies invest in their facilities, we know that they are committed to staying and growing in the region,” said Ken Daly, National Grid’s President of New York operations. “We realize the significant impact that the company has on the local and regional economies, and these types of investments are critical elements of economic development work in Western New York.”

National Grid’s program addressed Cummins’ light quality and efficacy concerns at the Jamestown Engine Plant, which covers 22 acres or about one million square feet. There, Cummins produces super-efficient diesel and natural gas engines. Cummins is the largest private employer in Chautauqua County.

As part of an enterprise-wide environmental sustainability plan, Cummins recently completed a number of updates that significantly reduced the Jamestown plant’s greenhouse gas emissions, water use and energy consumption. Some of these updates were made through its partnership with National Grid.

“Cummins’ innovation produces the right technologies at the right times for our customers. As our company looks to a future with increasing energy diversity, we know that diesel and natural gas solutions will provide our customers with the clean, dependable, reliable power they need to be successful in their businesses,” said Mike Abbate, Jamestown Engine plant manager. “These products will be an important part of our portfolio for many years to come. By continuing to invest in our facility, we are demonstrating our commitment to our customers, our employees and our communities.”

Facility upgrades

The Jamestown Engine Plant recently invested $47 million in new block line machining to accommodate production volumes. This investment consumes about 40,000 square feet, and was completed in May 2017. Associated with this investment the facility was awarded an additional 700 kilowatts of clean hydropower. These new machines are fully enclosed with central mist collection, creating a clean, dry floor work environment. They utilize on-demand hydraulics, coolant, and pneumatics to reduce energy consumption.
