PORTLAND, April 22, 2014 /3BL Media/ - The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and its Committee on the Environment (COTE) has named the Edith Green-Wendell Wyatt (EGWW) Federal Building one of the nation’s top ten examples of sustainable architecture and green design solutions that protect and enhance the environment. The LEED Platinum EGWW Federal Building is owned by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) and was constructed by Howard S. Wright, a Balfour Beatty company. The project architect is SERA Architects and the design excellence architect is Cutler Anderson Architects.

The COTE awards program, now in its 18th year, is the profession's best known national recognition program for sustainable design excellence. The award will be presented at the AIA 2014 national Convention and Design Exposition on June 26-28, 2014 in Chicago, Illinois.

“We are elated that the EGWW Federal Building project was selected by COTE, from a field of hundreds, to be included in this prestigious group of award-winning projects,” stated Jim Sather, Oregon division president. “By working as an integrated team with GSA, our subcontractors, and design counterparts, this modernization project is now among the most efficient facilities in the GSA portfolio. It is an outstanding example of the best of our industry.”

"We are extremely honored to receive the American Institute of Architecture's top sustainability award for GSA's Edith Green-Wendell Wyatt Federal Building," said Regional Administrator George Northcroft, GSA's Northwest/Arctic Region. "This award is an affirmation that architecture, construction, and design can work together to create a modern, efficient, and high performing building that saves taxpayers money."

The $139 million Edith Green-Wendell Wyatt Federal Building in the heart of Portland, Oregon, is an 18-story, 525,000-square-foot facility that is home to more than 16 federal agencies and 1,200 federal employees.

Through the efficiencies from the systems and envelope revisions, the team generated unique results that included a re-allocation of space that increased the gross building area by two additional floors of rentable area.

Additional sustainable project design solutions include:

  • 180-kilowatt photovoltaic array on the roof
  • LEED Platinum certification
  • New mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems that will save hundreds of thousands of dollars over the life of the project
  • Six passenger elevators that reduce elevator power use by up to 75% by generating electricity as it descends
  • Hydronic radiant heating and cooling systems that decrease overall annual energy use by 60%
  • Diversion of 89% of project waste (more than 7,214 tons) from landfills

The project also recently won a national Award of Merit from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) in the Building Renovation category and an Award of Merit from ENR Northwest in the Government/Public Buildings category.
