On behalf of everyone here at PCI-Media Impact (Media Impact), we would like to wish you a very happy World Environment Day.

We, at Media Impact, have been busy on the environmental front. With your support, we have continued our steadfast commitment to the survival of our environment by using the power of Entertainment-Education to promote important issues such as species conservation, climate change adaptation and sustainable development.

Media Impact recognizes that an integration of population, health and environmental approaches to conservation and development efforts can produce more sustainable long term outcomes.  Capacity development is at the core of this commitment.  We are partnering with local organizations to create Entertainment-Education programming to address issues such as tiger and gorilla conservation, climate change adaptation and natural resource management, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and sustainable livelihoods in 26 countries throughout Africa, the Caribbean, Asia and Latin America.

Many crucial partnerships have enabled Media Impact to create and launch these environmental programs. In West Africa, the Sustainable and Thriving Environments for West Africa Regional Development (STEWARD) program promotes biodiversity conservation, climate change, natural resource management, and water, sanitation and hygiene issues. Across the Caribbean, and working with more than 60 regional partners through the My Island-My Community program, which works to reduce damage to fragile island ecosystems while simultaneously promoting community adaptation to climate change. Centered around the radio drama Callaloo, the program works to counteract a long history of insularity by establishing national coalitions with shared goals. In Ghana, Biribireba addresses ecosystem governance and coastal management in a drama filled with intrigue, corruption, temptation, chaos and love.

Other programs scheduled to begin broadcast following successful workshops include My Gorilla – My Community in Nigeria to promote the cessation of illegal hunting and forest clearing to save the last 250 Cross River gorillas in the world; My Tiger-My Community in Laos to promote the conservation of Indochinese tigers in the Nam Ey-Phou Louey National Protected Area; and My Chimpanzee – My Community in Rwanda and Burundi to promote the preservations of chimpanzees and their habitat. Similarly in Peru, My Community, My Water: The Story of Our Water will use a national radio drama and local radio talk shows to motivate social change with regard to sanitation, hygiene and water resource management as well as improving gender equality.

Media Impact’s programs have increased knowledge, changed attitudes and facilitated behavioral change on some of the most critical environmental and social issues of our time but none of these would be possible without your support and the numerous partnerships we have had in our 27 years of work and continue to have.

So on this special day, we would like to recognize the invaluable contribution of our supporters and partners on the ground, who are working tirelessly to carry out Media Impact’s vision of “telling stories to change the world.”
