DALLAS – June 10, 2013 /3BL Media/ - As part of a global Sustainability Awareness Month in May among all Balfour Beatty companies, employees at Balfour Beatty Construction Services US participated in 19 days of “ecoengaged challenges” to help make an impact on the environment, while also raising awareness about the many ways sustainability helps build a better community.  From carpools and cardio to clients and caffeine, Balfour Beatty employees in the U.S. achieved impressive results.

While some of the daily challenges were difficult to measure in output, the following were tangible results achieved through active employee participation in this event:

  • More than 260 employees went lights out for an entire work day, saving approximately 7 hours of electricity for each person.
  • On “buy local” day, employees spent an average of $84 in their communities to support local businesses and help reduce the footprint of imported goods/services.
  • 425 trees will be donated to the Arbor Day Foundation to honor each employee who participated in wear green day.
  • On workout Wednesday, hundreds of employees logged 30 to 60 minutes of cardio exercise of some type.
  • In effort to help those who are less fortunate, $5,500 in food was donated to local food banks and charities.
  • By carpooling and using public transportation, employees collectively saved more than 9,000 miles through shared methods of transportation.

“This program is a positive way to show how each individual can impact the three pillars of our sustainability initiative – economic, social, and environmental,” said Tracy Browne, the company’s corporate vice president of sustainability. “Not only did the Olympics involve so many of us, but it showed the variety of items that contribute to sustainability and what an impact we can have together as a group.”

Balfour Beatty hosts Sustainability Month globally among 50,000+ employees worldwide. Each operating company chooses different ways to engage employees and encourage participation.
