Silver Spring, Md., November 15, 2012 /3BL Media/ - On Thursday, November 15, Discovery Communications will hold its third annual skills-based pro bono initiative, Discovery Impact: Creating Change in its Silver Spring and London offices. Creating Change forges a commitment to the community by donating Discovery’s most valuable resources, its talented employees, during a 12-hour creative marathon and conference. Employees donated their talents in myriad areas such as marketing, communications, creative design services, social media and video production, to help the organizations with their mission and goals. In addition, this year’s scope of services will include a Discover Your Skills component to the conference offerings.  The Discover Your Skills curriculum will train the organizations with tools and resources to better serve their clients’ needs, which include a mix of resume building, public speaking, and networking sessions.

This year’s nonprofit partners will receive design, technology, and communications services on over 30 projects. The organizations selected this year serve a number of community needs, including animal welfare organizations, underserved women and children support groups, and military veterans. In order to address the needs of the more than 100 organizations who applied for the marathon event, Discovery created a series of workshops, “The Creating Change Conference” both in Silver Spring and London that will include roundtable discussions covering a multitude of topics to be held during the event. All organizations that applied to Discovery Impact: Creating Change are invited to attend these workshops.

“Creating Change harnesses Discovery’s greatest assets, our talented, creative employees to help local nonprofit organizations with their marketing and communications needs,” said David Leavy, Chief Communications Officer and Senior Executive Vice President, Corporate Marketing and Affairs. “It has been one of our long-standing corporate values to give back to the communities where we live and work. This program not only underscores this dedication, but provides an outlet for our passionate employees to utilize their creative skills on behalf of nonprofits.”

Additionally, key Discovery partner Corbis Images, an image subscription site, will donate imagery from its library for use in print and online campaigns for the nonprofits, and Killer Tracks (www.killertracks.com), will provide use of their music library for PSAs and videos. Silver Spring-based production house Eye Candy also donated their animation, editing, and video production services.

Creating Change is one of several Discovery Impact hallmark initiatives, including an annual day of global employee volunteerism and a comprehensive disaster relief program. Discovery Impact leverages the power of Discovery's brands, businesses and employees to give back and make a direct impact on the communities in which we live and work.
