Astellas USA Foundation Launches STEM Education in Rural Communities Initiative

Complementing its wide array of existing partnerships, Astellas USA Foundation has launched an innovative Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiative to introduce the benefits of STEM education to middle school and high school students in targeted rural communities.

 “STEM is a critically important educational foundation for students who are both college-bound and career-ready, yet rural school districts in America often do not receive the kind of support that urban and suburban counterparts do,” says Jeff Winton, president, Astellas USA Foundation. “With our new rural STEM initiative, we hope to expand STEM access to these underserved communities to give more students an opportunity to thrive in academic and professional settings.”

Proposals for the rural STEM pilot program in Illinois are due August 15, 2016 and now being accepted on the Foundation’s new website for Science WoRx™, a philanthropic platform that funds opportunities to feed curiosity and ignite imaginations through hands-on STEM education programs. The website showcases Astellas USA Foundation’s nonprofit STEM partners, compelling testimonials and advice from Astellas employees who have served as mentors, and helpful classroom resources for teachers.

“Through resources like Science WoRx, the Astellas USA Foundation seeks to educate, inspire and empower all students to be big thinkers and enable them to create brighter lives and positively impact their communities,” says Winton. “We want to ensure the success of the next generation, whether they are scientists, IT pioneers, healthcare workers, machinists, farmers, teachers, plumbers or entrepreneurs.”
