Abbott was recently recognized for its work to advance sustainability and protect the environment in Ireland. The company received an Excellence In Environment Award at the Chambers Ireland Corporate Social Responsibility Awards.

The award recognizes Abbott’s efforts and results in the execution of programs across its six manufacturing sites in Ireland aimed at improving the environmental efficiency and sustainability of its business operations.

Abbott previously won the award in 2014 for initiatives designed to reduce waste, water usage and energy consumption across its manufacturing sites in Ireland.

John Kilcoyne, director at Abbott in Ireland, said, "At Abbott we are committed to reducing our global environmental impacts across our business. We have three environmental priorities – climate change, water usage and waste management – and are focused on achieving ambitious environment goals in these areas by 2020.”

"Abbott employees across Ireland are fully engaged in supporting our environmental goals and ambitions, and this is reflected in the achievements of our six manufacturing sites in implementing a range of innovative environmental solutions. This award is a tribute to the efforts of all our employees, and I am delighted to accept it on their behalf."

Abbott's diabetes care facility in Donegal has invested in a number of projects to safeguard the environment, including an energy reduction program across the site in 2015.  An energy survey was undertaken and areas for energy reduction identified.  Initiatives included replacing fluorescent lights with more energy efficient LED lighting and installing energy meters throughout the site. This resulted in a 6.3 percent reduction in energy usage (normalized to production).

"Everyone at Abbott's diabetes care business recognizes the importance of excellence in environmental practice across all our operations.  We’ve set a target of a reduction in CO2 every year to achieve our broader 2020 goal, and are also working to achieve the Energy Management Certification 50001, an important global standard for energy performance.  We’re delighted to have our efforts and those of all Abbott manufacturing sites in Ireland recognized by Chambers Ireland," said Liam Curley, site director, Abbott’s Donegal diabetes care facility.

The Chambers Ireland Corporate Social Responsibility Awards were established in 2004 to recognise the work being carried out by Irish and multinational companies to improve the lives of their employees and to enhance the civic and physical environment in which they operate.  For more information on the Chambers Ireland CSR Awards, click here.
