Beyond our work to discover, develop and manufacture vital medicines, we are focused on contributing to the greater good in society in numerous ways, which we share in our 2018 Responsibility Highlights Report. We continue to build our Access to Medicine effort, grow the number and reach of science education programs, improve the environmental footprint of our business and create a healthy, inclusive and safe work environment where innovation thrives.

Dr. Agbor Ashumanyi Ako, one of the co-founders of  Business Call to Action member GiftedMom, a digital health platform based in Cameroon that gives pregnant women and mothers across Africa access to vital health information and care, has been awarded the Oslo Business for Peace Award 2019.

Dr. Sara Saeed, Co-Founder and CEO of Business Call to Action member Sehat Kahani, a Pakistan-based telemedicine service that connects home-based female doctors with people in rural and impoverished communities to provide essential, low-cost healthcare, has been nominated for the 2019 Rolex Awards.

The Merck Foundation (the Foundation) and the American Cancer Society (ACS) recently announced that the Foundation awarded a $1.99 million, five-year grant to ACS to improve support and access to care for people living with cancer in low-and-middle-income countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. This funding will help ACS further develop its capacity development approach to expanding patient navigation to countries with a growing burden of cancer.

Building on more than 20 years of ongoing support for The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Aflac helps underwrite treatment for children, funds essential research, contributes to more than 50 children's hospitals nationwide, and supports child-life programs to improve quality of life and help children cope with their illness. Among its South Carolina efforts, the company sponsors a wing at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital-Midlands.

Last year, Comcast NBCUniversal helped Easterseals of Southeastern Pennsylvania create four makerspaces for our service centers in the Philadelphia area.
