For nearly 65 years, the Pfizer Foundation has been making important global health contributions around the world. This includes investments that support innovative approaches to breaking down barriers to health care access for women and children in low-resource communities, ultimately advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 for Gender Equality.

As much as 80 percent of learning a child does is visual, with children spending most of the school day reading, looking at a blackboard, and using laptops and tablets. However, come back-to-school season, parents overlook one of the most critical learning tools – their child’s eyes. Half (50.1 percent) of US parents do not bring their school-age children for a back-to-school eye exam, according to a VSP Vision Care and YouGov survey, “How Parents ‘See’ Eye Health.”

In a quest to create healthier office environments, more employers have embraced the scientific research behind modern office design. There’s even a high-tech facility called the Well Living Lab, a collaboration between the Mayo Clinic and Delos, that hosts studies on “how the indoor environment influences health, well-being and performance, from stress to sleep quality, physical fitness to productivity.”

70% of healthcare outcomes are based on the physical and social environments that we live in and work in daily. That includes our buildings, like how an office is designed or how our homes are constructed. But it also includes how we behave – how active we are, whether we smoke, and what we eat each day. It is clear that our physical environment has a significant impact on our health but it can also have an impact on our health-related behaviors.

On July 18th, Shire invited professionals local to Cambridge, MA to participate in Rare in Kendall Square: Collaborating to Advance Innovation in Rare Disease. Over 200 attendees gathered to network and weigh in on a panel discussion centered around the idea that partnerships can advance treatment options.

Scientists will get a better understanding of our planet’s carbon cycle and vegetation health through a first-of-a-kind NASA instrument built by Lockheed Martin. The Geostationary Carbon Cycle Observatory (GeoCARB) mission will use an advanced infrared spectrograph hosted on a commercial geosynchronous satellite. The project is led by Principal Investigator Dr. Berrien Moore at the University of Oklahoma.

To underscore that belief, we are proud that through the Pfizer Foundation we provide catalytic grants to social entrepreneurs and organizations, with the goal of improving access to affordable, quality healthcare care for those in need. We achieve this by providing funding and technical assistance to help scale potential high-impact innovations that aim to improve health systems and infrastructure in low-resource settings.
