For the last 51 years, the USO of Metropolitan New York has hosted an annual gala to celebrate the contributions of civilians and service members that have gone above and beyond in service to the United States and the Armed Forces, and to raise funds that support USO programs and services. In addition to Chênevert, the USO recognized Admiral William H. McRaven, Commander, United States Special Operations Command, United States Navy, with the 2013 Military Distinguished Service Award. The USO is a non-government, non-profit organization that offers an array of programs targeted to support active duty military and their families. USO services include support to forward-deployed service members; families of the fallen and wounded troops; as well as helping service members transitioning to civilian life. The USO has a legacy of lifting the spirits of American troops and their families through the work of a limited staff and thousands of volunteers.
