TransCanada has quietly – and once again – been recognized by an independent third party as one of Canada's Best 50 Corporate Citizens.

TransCanada ranked 40th on Corporate Knights' Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada list, announced June 4. It marks the 8th year that TransCanada has appeared on the list since it began in 2002.

"The organizations named to the best 50 each year by Corporate Knights represent the very best in corporate sustainability performance," said Doug Morrow, Managing Director of Corporate Knights Capital.

"They are leaders within their respective industries on a diverse set of sustainability metrics, and epitomize the concept of doing more with less."

Corporate Knights, an independent Canadian media and investment research company, ranks Canadian organizations on 12 'quantitative indicators' including how much water and energy they use and how many Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and waste they produce relative to the revenue they generate.

Other indicators include the proportion of taxes paid relative to earnings, workplace health and safety measures, and employee retention rates.

Fulfilling our end of the social contract

Overall, Corporate Knights defines a good corporate citizen as a company that fulfills its part of the social contract, while developing solutions to the pressing social and environmental challenges of our time.

"It's always gratifying to have the social and environmental integrity of our organization once again recognized by an independent third party, particularly given the level of scrutiny on the energy sector today," said Marie Rajic, Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility.

"Employees continue to diligently live those values in the communities we serve, with the focus on always doing the right thing," Marie added.

"It's no coincidence that those efforts have contributed to TransCanada being recognized both nationally and internationally, year after year. For that, we should all be very proud."
