The Park’s Department will soon be installing an automated external defibrillator (AED) at the Mendon Town Beach, following a donation by Republic Services.

Republic Services, which is the town’s trash and recycling service, presented the Mendon Parks Department a $1,000 check on Oct. 21, to purchase an AED for the beach, a unit that Daniel Byer of the Parks Department said they have a need for.

“We’ve been looking at options for several years,” said Byer, “and we applied for a grant a year ago through the state, but they ran out of money.”

The department plans to purchase and install the unit in the spring, after seeking advice from the Mendon Fire Department regarding which type of unit to purchase. The units, according to Byer, cost about $1,800 to $2,000, so the department will have to cover the remaining balance.
