Keep America Beautiful Recycling Tips for the Holiday!

Dec 22, 2017 11:00 AM ET

The holidays are filled with family gatherings, parties with friends, wrapping gifts and decorating, all of which can substantially increase the amount of waste we generate.

But it doesn't have to be that way!

One way to be more sustainable during the holiday season is to recycle your decorative lights when they no longer work.  Decorative lights do not go in your curbside recycling bin.  Find your local recycling contact on our #BeRecycled recycling locator for more information on collection events or recycling drop-off locations in your community.

Here are some other tips to be more sustainable during your celebrations this holiday season.

  • Reuse newspaper and paper bags in place of wrapping paper for gifts.  Don't forget to recycle the paper afterwards!
  • Use reusable dishware, cutlery, and napkins instead of disposable plastic, foam, and paper plates and utensils.
  • Buy products made with recycled content to help "close the loop" and support the recycling industry.
  • Cut back on food waste by being realistic about how much food you will need.
