DIRECTV is proud to recognize 11 City Year AmeriCorps members from six U.S. cities with its 2015 Math Achievement Awards. This program, now in its second year, presents a free year of DIRECTV Service to AmeriCorps members who have made a profound impact on student math achievement while serving with City Year at high-need K-12 schools.

  • Baton Rouge, La.: Tiana Hill
  • Columbus, Ohio: Grace Campos
  • Denver, Colo.: DeLayna Goulding and Zack Minner
  • Los Angeles, Calif.: Humberto Merino; Jessica Castenada; Salvador Robles; Tyvonna Johnson; Roberto Ramos
  • San Jose/Silicon Valley, Calif.: Olumuyiwa Akinrimisi
  • Tulsa, OK.: Gabe Woolley

These AmeriCorps members used creative methods to get their students back on track after falling behind in math – and their efforts paid off. In Los Angeles, for example, 40% of students who were failing math improved to a passing grade and 87% of teachers reported that student performance in math improved thanks to support from City Year AmeriCorps members.

Read more about the innovative techniques developed by award winners in Los Angeles on the City Year Los Angeles blog, and visit the DIRECTV GOES TO SCHOOL website for special interviews with winners like Tiana Hill and Olumuyiwa Akinrimisi.

DIRECTV/City Year Los Angeles Partnership:
City Year is a national service organization that unites diverse young adults, ages 17 to 24, for a year of full-time service as tutors, mentors and role models in high-need schools where the majority of students need extra support. For the 2014-2015 school year, DIRECTV was City Year Los Angeles’ Strategic Math Sponsor. DIRECTV’s grant helped to underwrite the math training and development of all 288 AmeriCorps members serving as tutors and mentors at 25 elementary, middle and high schools across LA. In addition, DIRECTV’s support helped City Year Los Angeles create a Math Coordinator position at each school to lead math tutoring, events and engagement. The 25 AmeriCorps members selected to be their school’s Math Coordinator were invited to DIRECTV for a special professional development event in the spring.
