2016 Annual Responsibility Review

2016 was a transformative year for Shire. We are bigger and more impactful now, but our focus is the same: to meet the needs of people around the world with rare diseases. As we evolve and strengthen our leadership position, our approach to Responsibility will be fundamental to our success and our ability to help people with life-altering conditions to live better lives.

Shire Examines Packaging to Reduce Carbon Footprint
In 2016, we worked with third party partner, The Carbon Trust, on a lifecycle assessment to recertify the product carbon footprints of three different bags of Flexbumin 25% [Albumin (Human)] sold in the U.S., Europe, Latin America, and Asia. From plasma collection, to manufacturing, distribution, and end-of-life, the assessment looked at the whole product lifecycle to understand where the biggest carbon impacts arose.

Health & Healthcare

Shire Partners with The ACMG Foundation for Genetic and Genomic Medicine
Across the U.S., there is a significant shortage of medical geneticists. With only one geneticist for every 600,000 individuals, the U.S. has less than half of the genetic workforce it needs. As an issue directly related to our business, we announced a $1.65 million grant to the ACMG Foundation for Genetic and Genomic Medicine. The ACMG Foundation is a non-profit organization that works to attract and fund training for the next generation of medical geneticists and genetic counselors. The Foundation also sponsors important research, and promotes information about medical genetics.

Social Impact & Volunteering

Shire Employees Volunteered Over 25,000 Hours in 2016
On October 7, Shire hosted its second annual Global Day of Service. More than one-third of our newly expanded workforce participated in volunteer projects worldwide. Employee volunteers dedicated over 25,000 hours of their time in more than 150 locations.

Diversity & Inclusion

Diverse and Inclusive Workforce Inspires Innovation at Shire
At Shire, we are committed to people of all races, genders and sexual orientations. We believe our collective differences provide a solid foundation for our sector-leading position. Harnessing our differences provides a wealth of ideas and innovations that allow us to be more responsive to customer needs.

Environment

Shire Facilities Divert 66% of Total Waste to Landfill
Our focus on how we use resources improves efficiency, creates less waste, and reduces risks and impacts on the environment and our local communities.

Health & Healthcare

Improving Diagnostic Pathways for Rare Disease Patients
It can take longer to diagnose rare diseases than many common diseases. On average, rare disease diagnosis takes 7.6 years in the U.S. and 5.6 years in the UK. Rare diseases such as the primary immunodeficiency (PI) disorders Gaucher disease, Fabry disease, and Hunter syndrome can be devastating, as they are difficult to detect and equally difficult to treat.
