A Table with a Certain…. ‘Waltonesque’ Charm

(3BL Media / theCSRfeed) November 2, 2011 - Remember hauling out grandma’s big farmhouse table for Sunday supper underneath the big oak tree?  Neither do we, but this homey trestle table by Fable Porch makes us want to pretend like we do.  That was reason enough to make it our Greenspiration Home “Pick-of-the-Week”

Farmhouse charm isn’t all that this table or this American furniture manufacturer has going for it.  The company has a strong commitment to building furniture that is both durable and sustainable.  The hand-mixed finishes are key.  Customers have many options in terms of color and finishing style, but Fable Porch makes no compromises when it comes to the non-toxic paints and topcoats that they use on all their furniture—from chairs to beds.

Non-Toxic Charm

“We mix our own stains using non toxic oils, earth pigments and resins,” said Angela Mabe, Vice President of Sales for the family owned business in Lawsonville, NC.  According to Mabe, even water-based stains can be highly toxic, even if they are promoted as being “green.”

Also, you will never encounter two pieces of Fable Porch furniture that are exactly alike.  “All our furniture is bench made and hand assembled, no assembly lines -- ever.  We use a German European style of build which many nowadays refer to as Amish,” added Mabe.

The company sources all its wood products from renewable and domestic resources. The century old barn wood they use in the manufacture of some of their pieces is harvested by hand from North Carolina and Virginia.

Family Values

We chatted with Fable Porch at the High Point Furniture Market where they were part of the Made in the USA Pavilion.  There, we were delighted to learn that in addition to the company’s sustainability initiatives, they work hard to build furniture that can withstand the rigors of everyday family life.

“That’s the real test, is it not?” asked Mabe.

We couldn’t agree more.  Furniture that isn’t destroyed tends to stay out of landfills!
